For this purpose, part 1

With Palm Sunday, Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, in the rear view mirror, I want to take us on a journey of what Jesus experienced the week of His death. And not only re-focus on His passion, but learn afresh what it means for us. These are meant to be short devotionals for you, either as individuals, as families, or as other small groups. Before continuing to watch the short video below please take time to read today’s Scripture: John 12:27-36.

As you continue to reflect on the Word that you read, make sure you’re understanding the text:

  • According to the text, what was the purpose of Jesus coming to earth? Again, reflect back to John 12:23-26 for reference.

  • How do we know that God approved of what Jesus was doing? (see v 28)

  • If God sent Jesus to be “lifted up” (die), what does this tell us about who God is?
What does that tell us about His love for us?

  • Do you ever struggle to believe that the Son of Man, the infinite, eternal Creator of the universe, should have to die? Yet in these verses Jesus confirms that He came for this purpose: “But for this purpose I have come to this hour.”

  • How do you become a “son of light”? Are you a son (or daughter) of light? Read 1 John 1:5-7 for more on walking in the light.

The goal of any devotional, or reading from the Bible, is to get us to respond to the Author, to God Himself. Spend time in prayer now, either individually or in a group if you’re with one, responding to the Father who willingly sent His Son to this earth to be rejected, and to Jesus, who willingly came. Your yourself must answer to Jesus’ words: “Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” Take heart, Jesus has shown the way to a life that glorifies God!
