current sermon series
Our current Sunday morning series is a study of the book of The Acts of the Apostles, which is Luke's follow up to his gospel. This study picks up right after the resurrection of Jesus and traces the incredible birth of the Christian church, the mighty opposition it faced, and the awesome explosion of growth it experienced as Jesus' followers traveled across the known world to be a witness. The resurrection of Jesus becomes not only the impetus that fuels this witness, but the witness itself. The purpose of the study is not necessarily to make our modern day church look just like the church in Acts, but rather to identify the things that accompanied this unstoppable movement of God, which we do want to duplicate today. Among these things we will find the necessity to fear God more than man, an unwavering commitment to obedience to the Holy Spirit, a thorough understanding of Scripture that is coupled with experiencing the presence of Christ, and prayer...much more prayer than most have even thought of. Join us for this exciting study of The Acts of the Apostles!

We believe in the inspiration, inerrancy, and authority of the Scriptures and seek to faithfully interpret them as a body.
We believe in the church as the body of Christ, the called out ones, separated unto God regardless of color, race, geography, or culture.
We believe the home is the primary place where Biblical truth is taught and displayed.
Merlin married his wife, Heidi, in 2000 and together they live with their 6 children (2 sons and 4 daughters) in Shipshewana, IN. While in high school the Lord began drawing Merlin to a personal relationship, and in 1998 he chose to signify his commitment to Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord through baptism. Soon after that he began serving at Riverview, preaching as a lay pastor as early as 2001. In 2006 he was licensed as the associate pastor, in 2008 ordained to that role, and in 2010 transitioned into the role of senior pastor. His passion remains to preach the Word of God in a systematic, clear and applicable way in order to exhort others to exchange the selfish life for one dedicated to Christ. A verse that was instrumental in his conversion, and remains fundamental to his life is Proverbs 3:5-6:
Trust in the Lord with all of your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Merlin and his wife Regina live in Middlebury, IN along with their 6 children. On April 20, 1978 Merlin was saved and dedicated his life to Christ, and his desire is to honor and glorify God, and to stir others to knowing Christ. He has served as an elder at Riverview to fulfill that desire since 2007. His favorite verse is 1 John 1:9 because of the promise of forgiveness it contains if we confess our sins:
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Elwood and his wife Christine live in White Pigeon, MI. They have 2 grown sons, Caleb (who is married to Kayla) and Trenton, and 2 grandchildren, Emma and Owen. Elwood accepted Christ as his personal Savior at a young age, and one of his primary goals is that his life is a good testimony of Christ. He has served as an elder more than once at Riverview, most recently since 2005. A meaningful Bible verse for him is 1 Corinthians 10:13:
There hath no temptation taken you but such as man can bear: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it.
Ernie and his wife Ruby live in Middlebury, IN. They have two sons, Caleb and Kerry. Ernie has been an elder at Riverview since 2015 and is passionate about living and showing that there is ONE God and there is NO OTHER! At the age of 14 Ernie trusted Christ for his salvation, and since then has claimed Isaiah 41:10 as a special verse:
Fear thou not. For I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Ed has been married to his wife Marilyn since 1960 and they have 3 sons, 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. They reside in Bristol, IN. He has been a follower of Christ since the age of 11 when he accepted Jesus as his Lord and was baptized. His passion is for his family to also serve the Lord, and that others who are lost would come to know the Lord. Having previously served as an elder, Ed has now been a deacon at Riverview since 2014. His favorite verse of Scripture is John 14:1 which reminds him that we do not need to fear the future because God is in control:
Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God believe also in Me.
